Possums Are Awesome!

June 7, 2016

Great children's books that include possums!

Some of the best children’s books share a common theme...possums!

Seriously. I know these marsupials can be repulsive in real life. But in children’s literature, they are fabulous. If you don’t believe me, then expand your literary palate to include possums and check out these titles.

Possum Come a-Knockin’ by Nancy Van Laan

One of my all-time favorite children’s books! Illustrated by The New Yorker cartoonist George Booth, this delightfully rhythmic tale follows a country family that is tricked by a possum. The best part is the beat! When read aloud, this book's rhythm and ryhming will make you feel like you're calling a square dance. Be sure to practice before reading it aloud though, it takes some effort.

Who Invited You? by Candace Fleming

This book also has a similar feel to Possum Come a-Knockin’, becuase of the rhythm and rhyming. However the settingis a swamp, not a country home, and readers are introduced to several swamp-dwelling animals...an alligator, beaver, racoon, etc. With each character trying to fit in the boat going down stream, the little girl's expressions are priceless. George Booth is the illustrator, bringing to life another funny little tale.

Night Animals by Gianna Marino

Marino introduces different night animals, all with one thing in common- they are afraid of the dark. The simple illustrations magnify the darkness of night, and the character expressions show each character is truly scared. This book will make for a great read aloud or bedtime story because of its simplicity and the (very relatable) fear of darkness.

Possum Magic by Mem Fox

This selection is the bestselling children’s book in Australia! Written by the legendary Mem Fox, this book includes two loveable possums, Grandma Poss and Hush. Sprinkled with magic and a lesson in Australian geography/cuisine, this is a fun book to read aloud again and again.

Playing Possum by John Jansen

This lovely non-fiction book is packed with jokes about marsupials! If you have a child in your life that loves a good joke, this is a great pick.
