PLAY! The Art of Mike Schacht

August 1, 2016

Mike Schacht's iconic baseball player portraits come to Nashville Public Library.

PLAY! The Art of Mike Schacht

Anchoring the exhibit are popular paintings, etchings, and silkscreen prints of his baseball heroes, many inspired by his childhood scrapbooks. The portraits depict pivotal moments of each baseball legends' career, many from earlier in their playing days. Works feature Hall of Fame baseball players Ted Williams, Jackie Robinson, Ty Cobb, and Willie Mays.

The images, rendered in gray scale, recall the era of games on black and white television, including Willie May's catch and Ted Williams' last home run. Mike Schacht created the art during the Eighties and early Nineties. Several of his pieces are also featured at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. His player silhouettes in metal inspired the backdrop of Major League Baseball’s national office and also appeared on fashion-designer Nicole Miller ties.

The exhibit also features Upper Deck baseball cards and sketches for an unfinished mural of the first Baseball Hall of Fame inductees. It is the first retrospective of Schacht's work since 2008.

Visit the Exhibit and Related Events during your next library trip.

The free art exhibit runs from August 7 through December 31, 2016 in the Courtyard Gallery at the Main Library.

Plan to attend two celebrations of the exhibit, featuring distinguished guests discussing baseball and art.
