RUSH

March 8, 2018

No, his mind is not for rent. To any God or government...

I always think I’ve reached the pinnacle of geekdom, but then I seem to find something that makes me even geekier. Like discovering Rush. You know, the Canadian prog rockers? The guys who wrote Tom Sawyer? Yeah, them.  I know I’m a little behind the times, but since I’m not a teenage boy in the 70’s, maybe you can cut me some slack.

I’ve known about Rush for a long time, but mostly as the butt of many, many jokes. It wasn’t until their music played a pretty important role in the upcoming Ready Player One (see my next post for more love there) that I thought maybe I should explore further. My first stop was the album 2112. You can check it out on Hoopla. In fact, it looks like we have their entire catalog available for streaming on hoopla. I’d also be sure to listen to Moving Pictures and Snakes and Arrows. Those are their three biggest albums.

Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart make up the power trio from our northern neighbors. The band first formed in the late 60s, but Peart didn’t join as master drummer until 1974. Forty-one years and 20 studio albums later, the band is officially retired. Lead guitarist Lifeson confirmed it January 25 in the Toronto Globe. Figures, I finally find a cool band and now I’ll never get to see them live.

Good thing the library has several of their concert DVDs to check out.

We also have several books, including a couple penned by The Professor himself.

So join me and the other planets of the Solar Federation before the Priests of the Temple of Syrinx take control. (See, I told you I was geeky.)

Happy Rushing…
