4 New Food Books

November 7, 2019

A cookbook, an essay collection, a chef memoir, and a book by a James Beard Award-winning food journalist.

Erin Gleeson’s latest focuses on the foods of Spain, Italy, France, and Portugal.  Full of the gorgeous photography and easy vegetarian recipes that her fans have come to expect, but even more so.  The 3-ingredient recipe for Chocolate Hazelnut Cake Cups is worth a checkout alone, but there are also lovely drinks, unusual salads (Seared Fennel and Clementine, for example), and many, many tapas/antipasti recipes such as Carrot-Pistachio Couscous, Mushroom Croquettes, and Squash and Custard Tartlets.

This is an extremely well-written and engaging look at food and drink trends and chefs over the past decade. Not surprisingly, there are several chapters on André Prince Jeffries and Nashville hot chicken!

Collections like this are usually hit-or-miss, but this was so consistently good.  I especially liked the essays about salty licorice, Alaskan traditional foods, and Kit Kats.  Samin Nosrat, the author of Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat, was this year’s editor.

Recommended for fans of Give a Girl a Knife and longlisted for this year’s National Book Award in nonfiction (winners will be announced November 20).
